The Canadian Car Of The Year Fall Testing Program Is Coming To Canadian Tire Motorsport Park

The Automobile Journalists Association of Canada (AJAC) has announced that the 28th annual Canadian Car of the Year (CCOTY) “TestFest” event will be held at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park on October 26-30, 2015.

The week-long event sees the most important new model vehicles each year brought together in a single venue to be tested, back-to-back against their competition, by a group of 70-80 journalists.

The sports and performance cars will take to Canadian Tire Motorsport Park’s 2.88 km Driver Development Track and the large skid pad as well as five days on the public roads surrounding the venue, while the crossovers, utility vehicles and pickup’s will utilize the off-road trails on the 900+ acre property for their testing components.

“We are proud to welcome an automotive testing event of this importance and scale,” said Myles Brandt, President and General Manager at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park.

“The facility, with multiple race tracks, skid pads as well as the off-road course will provide AJAC with everything they require to run the vehicles through the various tests. Many consumers base their choice of vehicle on these results so we couldn’t be happier to play a part in that.”

“We are all car people at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park, and are thrilled that our facility will play host to the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada and their “TestFest” event, to determine the 2016 Canadian Car of the Year awards,” added Ron Fellows, co-owner at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park.

“It’s yet another prestigious event to add to our 2015 calendar.”

The CCOTY program, which is open to new-this-year models, sees the highest-scoring vehicle in each testing category declared a winner, before all category winners re-compete for the overall title of Canadian Car of the Year, Canadian Utility Vehicle of the Year and new to the program Canadian Green Car of the Year. A field of dozens of vehicles is narrowed down to a handful of top-scoring finalists, and then just two overall winners.

“The Automobile Journalists Association of Canada’s (AJAC) Canadian Car of the Year (CCOTY) awards committee is excited to bring their annual “TestFest” event – where new model vehicles are evaluated each October by the country’s top automotive journalists – to Canadian Tire Motorsport Park,” said Gary Grant, Co-chair, Canadian Car of the Year Awards.

“The world class facilities at CTMP will usher in a new era for AJAC’s respected awards program, ensuring that the Canadian Car of the Year awards remain the most relevant shopping tool for Canadian new car shoppers.”

The International Motor Sports Association (IMSA) has unveiled the four-venue, 10-event schedule for the Ultra 94 Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Canada by Michelin, one of 20 global Porsche 911 GT3 Cup one-make championships that provide thrilling action and groom drivers for future TUDOR United SportsCar Championship competition in North America or professional GT racing worldwide.

The fifth season of the championship starts May 15-17 at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park and ends August 28-30 at the same venue.

“This schedule provides a great platform for continued strength for the Ultra 94 Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Canada by Michelin in its fifth season,” said Randy Hembrey, Senior Series Manager, Development and Single-Make Series for IMSA.

“The constant increase in competition and professionalism from our drivers and teams will create even more excitement for the incredibly loyal, passionate Canadian motorsport fans. Everyone in the championship also appreciates the strong, valuable support of Porsche, Michelin and Ultra 94.”

Drivers and teams from Canada and the United States will compete on event weekends that also include action from the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series, NASCAR Canadian Tire Series and Verizon IndyCar Series, among others.

The fifth Ultra 94 Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Canada by Michelin season gets underway May 15-17 with the traditional Castrol presents the Victoria Day SpeedFest Weekend opener at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park in Bowmanville, Ontario.

Teams and drivers then will head to Canada’s largest city for two rounds June 12-14 on the street circuit at the Honda Indy Toronto, an event taking place a month earlier than usual due to the Pan Am Games taking place in mid-July in Toronto.

The series will stay in Ontario for two rounds July 4-5 at Calabogie Motorsports Park in Calabogie, Ontario.

Ultra 94 Porsche GT3 Cup Challenge Canada by Michelin drivers and teams then head July 31-August 2 to the Grand Prix Trois-Rivières (GP3R) for two rounds on the street circuit in Trois-Rivières, Quebec.

The series returns to Ontario for its traditional season-ending event August 28-30 at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park, running in conjunction with the NASCAR Camping World Truck Series, NASCAR Canadian Tire Series, Canadian Touring Car Championship and the Canadian F2000 Championship.

“Racing represents a cornerstone of the brand,” said Alexander Pollich, President & CEO, Porsche Cars Canada, Ltd. “Such a rich history is built on the passion and dedication of the people who build and drive the cars. These elements are what we celebrate at Porsche, and this series is a perfect example of their successful culmination.”

Racing is divided into two classes – Platinum Cup, featuring the 2014 and 2015 Porsche 911 GT3 Cup car, which is based on the seventh, and current, generation of the street car; and Gold Cup, which is comprised of the previous iteration (model years 2010-2013) of the race car. A Masters Championship also is conducted in the Platinum class. Each class is awarded with its own podium at the end of every race and individual champion at the end of every season. Points are awarded by finish in class.
